There is an old adage that says "it takes a village to raise a child." I agree with this statement. However, I would expand the basic idea to read "it takes a village to create." I prefer this version because, as a general principle, human beings need each other to make great things. We encourage each other. We inspire each other. We challenge each other. We teach each other.
Design is a sensitive ecosystem which requires collaboration between people with different talents and perspectives. It appears to me that no product worthwhile is ever designed in a vacuum because that has been my experience to this point. Throughout my career I have had the unique pleasure of working with extraordinary people who have helped lift me higher than I could have reached on my own. While I claim the work on this website as my own I cannot say I did it by myself. In each instance I received feedback and contributions from talented people and I have done my best to give credit where credit is due. If you are one of these incredible people then thank you! I will be forever grateful for the influence you have had not only in my work but in my life.
The design process is iterative, exhilarating, frustrating and ultimately joyful. It give us a chance to stretch our thinking, see the world from another's point of view, learn new skills, see failures as opportunities, improve the world around us and in the process improve ourselves. In a way, design is a reflection of life itself. In both cases we succeed by understanding and helping people.
That is why I love design.
